Believe it or not, there are parts of Arizona that are not
desert. They have tall pines and rainy summers with chilly nights. And they are
all pretty much within 3 hours of Phoenix. Some as close as just over 1 hour.
Because Phoenix is a place that seems to resemble the surface of the sun for
several months out of the year, anyone who can gets the hell out of dodge the
minute school is out and doesn’t come back until it starts again. Some people
go stay with relatives, some have family lake homes they go to and some have second
homes in other states or, more popularly, the cool northern parts of Arizona.
We are not those people.
We do not have a second home, cabin, or place to go so for
the most part, we sit in Phoenix and sweat, waiting and wishing for summer to
end. It won’t until October, but that doesn’t prevent us from wishing anyway. WE
wander around saying silly things to each other like “It really isn’t too bad
out today!” when it’s “only” 102, and “At least it is still nice in the morning”
when the overnight low is 84.
However, we are lucky enough to know a few people who do
have places north of the valley and they are incredibly generous with their
time and their homes.
I have a friend who is always happy to have me join her up
north and we have a blast. This week our next door neighbors are back east with
family for the holiday week and they have graciously offered us use of their
home in the pines.
As it happens this week is also The Hubs and my 27th
anniversary. We got married on the 4th of July (that’s a whole other
story!) and so we have a lovely extended holiday at a great cabin home. We have
the doors and windows open and plan to enjoy every minute we have of doing absolutely
nothing.
Honestly, if you cannot afford to have a summer home, don’t worry.
You just need really awesome friends.
